Top Surfing Spots in the Philippines

With thousands of islands and long coastlines, the Philippines feels like a surfer’s paradise. While great surf spots are not everywhere, there are some top destinations that offer incredible waves and experiences. Here’s where to go when you’re ready to ride.

Siargao Island: Chasing Waves at Cloud 9

Siargao is the Philippines’ surfing capital. The legendary Cloud 9 break has earned worldwide fame for its powerful, consistent right-hand reef break. The peak season is July to October, when waves are at their best. Cloud 9 is not for beginners, but don’t worry – Siargao has gentler breaks like Kawhagan and Pacifico where you can build your skills.

Getting to Siargao

  • Fly to Manila (MNL) or Cebu (CEB) first.

  • Connect to Siargao’s Sayak Airport (IAO) on airlines like Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, or Cebgo (1.5 to 2.5 hours).

  • From the airport, you can reach your accommodation by:

    • Tricycle: Affordable and easy for short distances.

    • Van: A good option for groups or large luggage. Many hotels offer transfers.

Siargao is perfect for surfers of all levels and offers a laid-back island lifestyle that’s hard to beat.

La Union: Beginner-Friendly Waves in San Juan

La Union, located in northern Luzon, is perfect for those new to surfing. The town of San Juan is the heart of the action, offering long, rolling waves that are ideal for beginners and intermediate surfers. Surf schools and rental shops line the beach, so you can get started easily.

Getting to La Union

From Manila:

  • Bus: The cheapest option, taking 4 to 6 hours depending on traffic.

  • Van: A bit faster and more comfortable, around 4 hours.

From Other Areas:

  • Check for domestic flights to Laoag International Airport (LAO), about 2 hours from La Union.

  • Buses and vans also run from major Philippine cities to La Union.

Getting around San Juan is simple with tricycles or motorbike rentals. Expect chill beach vibes, friendly locals, and plenty of opportunities to practice your surfing.

Eastern Samar: Escape the Crowds at Guiuan and Calicoan Island

If you want something off the beaten track, head to Eastern Samar. The waves at Guiuan and nearby Calicoan Island are uncrowded and perfect for intermediate and advanced surfers.

Guiuan

Guiuan has long, smooth waves and a peaceful vibe, ideal for surfers looking to relax and focus on the ride.

Calicoan Island

Just a short boat ride away, Calicoan offers consistent breaks at secluded coves. The waves here are more suited for experienced surfers ready for a challenge.

Beyond the Surf

Eastern Samar isn’t just about surfing. Explore the historical landing site of the Magellan-Doña Isabel Expedition, visit small fishing villages, and experience the friendly culture of the Samareños.

Getting to Eastern Samar

From Manila:

  • Plane: Limited domestic flights to Guiuan (GUN). Flights may not run daily, so plan ahead.

  • Bus and Ferry: A long journey but budget-friendly. Take a bus from Manila to Cebu, then ferry to Calbayog City, Samar, and travel by bus or van to Guiuan.

From Other Locations:

  • Look for connecting flights or land/ferry combinations via Calbayog City.

Note: Eastern Samar is best for surfers with experience. If you’re a beginner, stick with La Union or Siargao’s beginner-friendly beaches.
